Meditate

Psalm 143:5
I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.

Testing, testing... Let's get things going here again, huh? :)

What do you think about as you do laundry, pay bills, do dishes, wipe noses and bottoms, and all the other required-but-rather-mundane-tasks we do as moms? After all, we women are great at multi-tasking, and rarely do those things require our full attention! Do you tend to worry? Do you tend to throw pity-parties? Do you complain inwardly? I know I do sometimes. And I've found, amazingly, that although the tasks don't wear me out, that kind of thinking will!

It does me no good to simply decide I'm not going to think about that, whatever "that" happens to be. That's kind of like saying, no matter what you do, do not think about an elephant. Nope, no elephants here. Do NOT picture how big they are, or what color they are, or what their trunk looks like. Nope, no elephants. OK, what are we all thinking about right now? The only solution to negative thoughts is to flood our minds with truth. For me, that means reading my Bible daily, sometimes more than once. It means listening to the Bible on CD while I work in my home. It means choosing worship music over something else sometimes. It means having sermons that are full of truth playing on my computer while I do dishes and laundry and change diapers.

Some days I do this better than others. It's not always easy. It's not a quick fix. But, someone once told me changing your habits is kind of like wearing a new pathway. It's easy to go back to the old, worn one. But once you have traveled the new one enough times, the ruts in that new road become deeper than the old ones, and it's not so tough to travel anymore. At first, turning your thoughts toward Christ and His love for you rather than worrying about money seems nearly impossible, almost phony - this isn't me! The next time it might be a bit easier. Some days it's nearly impossible again. But if you keep it up, eventually it becomes a habit that brings life to you instead of death.

As my pastor said this weekend, "The first step is to believe how much God loves you, and that you are His child..." Meditate on that all day today, and watch your heart still be full at the end of the day!

  1. Oy. I needed this. I just got done with two days of crying (by me and them)and not being able to handle my kids lately. Everything you said is so true. I wish my habits were to meditate on God when doing the mundane tasks or having a rough day, but that's all I do is wish. I need to take that new road and travel on it everyday and let that become my habit. I'll feel so much better and I'm sure my kids will too. This was so well said. Thanks. I reeeeeeally needed it today.:)
